Why Hospice Care?
Hospice care is a term that encompasses skilled, medical, emotional, and spiritual care to terminally ill patients. Hospice care focuses on the quality of life instead of trying to cure diseases. With approximately 50% of patients passing away receiving hospice benefits and the growth of an aging population, this business model offers huge rewards.
The goal of Hospice care is for the patient and family to receive needed care within the home without having to utilize the hospital as a revolving door model. If a person lives in a nursing facility, such as a nursing home or assisted living facility, they receive the same hospice care benefits as a person who lives in their own home.
Medicare & Hospice
Medicare and private insurances offer a hospice benefit to policyholders with a terminal illness. Medicaid and the Veteran’s Health Administration follow the Medicare benefit model which allows individuals to receive palliative, quality end-of-life care. Services are offered and reimbursed at three levels:
1) Routine Care
2) Continuous Home Care
3) General Inpatient Care
Respite care is a service designed to provide families a short break from caring for their loved ones at home. The services provided depend on what the patient and the family need. Type of services received and how often is based on the needs of each patient and family. The services that are provided can be adjusted as the situation of the patient and family change over time.
A Hospice agency requires accreditation through Medicare. The 3 accrediting agencies, Accreditation Commission for Healthcare (ACHC), Community Health Accreditation Partner (CHAP), and Joint Commission (JC), have deeming authority and can be contracted to provide this survey and accreditation on behalf of Medicare.
