Private Duty Licensing & Accreditation

What Is Private Duty Home Care?

For the past decade, Private Duty Home Care has been the fastest growing segment of healthcare in America. With the increase in need, desire for convenience, and a growing trend to age-in-place, owning a Private Duty Home Health Agency is an excellent business opportunity.

“Private Duty” is a broad term that encompasses all types of in-home care. The sky is the limit for programs an agency may offer. Niche programs may incorporate:

Custodial Care
Companion Care

Goal Of Private Duty Care

The goal of Private Duty Care is to provide clients with services that will help the client remain in their home while receiving medical or non-medical care. Services may vary from specialized concierge services for select populations to help with activities of daily living to assist a person to live comfortably while enjoying an enhanced level of quality of life.

Skilled services may be provided by a nurse, dietician, social worker, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or speech therapist depending on the business model. Non-skilled care such as custodial care, companion care, and live-in care can be provided by well-trained caregivers such as CNA’s and Home Health Aides.

Who Pays For Private Duty?

Private Duty care is usually paid for by patient/family. Payment for Private Duty care may also be paid for by long-term-care-insurance, State Medicaid programs, and/or some Medicare Advantage programs (with proper contracts). Private Duty Home Care agencies can further enhance their services through acquiring a Medicare certification for the Home Infusion Therapy Services.

*Note that a Private Duty Agency requires licensing through the state. Agencies may also seek accreditation through ACHC, JC, and CHAP.
